Micromanagers sometimes feel that they need to review or do everything to reduce risk. If this is you:
- Encourage your team to provide feedback and speak up about risks.
- Give yourself permission to hear all feedback provided. (not always easy)
There are examples of disasters because teams felt uncomfortable speaking out with a concern or a risk: NASA Challenger and the rise and reign of Hitler to name just a couple. While these are extreme examples, that is exactly the point.
If your people are not comfortable speaking up about something small, they may not speak up when the stakes are high. Encouraging healthy debate and conflict has been shown to reduce organizational risk and increase trust.
