Many companies today push people to get a new role every 15 to 18 months. If someone chooses not to get a new role, they are said to pigeon hole themselves. As a result, they are often not rated as highly during annual reviews.
Companies should consider eliminating this practice. If we want people to gain a more diverse view of a company, develop formal rotation programs to facilitate the experience.
However, if we truly want quality and efficiency, then let’s support people who are well suited to their roles, let them go deep, and be experts. Let’s encourage them to thrive doing what they were made to do.
